I think it is right to start freelancing. If you known something about web design, you can do it. Experience comes from practice. Star freelancing not only to make money, but accumulate your experience.

If you decide to star, I share a good platform to you. 2xrs reverse service platform. know about it!

I don't see any harm in trying your hand at freelancing while in college. My boyfriend said he made 40K while freelancing and working part-time jobs in college. He was a computer programmer so he got paid much better than I did in college. I had a library job that paid minimum wage.

Go for it and consider even your missteps and failures a success. Try not to see yourself too cheaply though. I know a lot of people volunteering and killing themselves. That is not the way to start a business. If you are going to work for free, volunteer for yourself by building a portfolio, learning new skills, practicing your craft, and marketing the hell out of yourself.

I'd recommend looking into what you can do with FB pages a little more. Building an FB page the "right" way, most of the content is actually hosted on your own server, FB is simply the delivery mechanism. But it's a delivery mechanism with a little more to it than merely another "channel", with the obvious benefits of what you can do with "like" and "share" and being able to access users' data.

But yeah, built well you have all the same info on your own server as if it was a stand alone site.

I'm not a big fan of how dominant FB has become, but I'm also not blind to it's potential, nor do I believe it's going anywhere but upwards for a while. Quite simply FB is where people "are", and if your target market is spending the majority of their online time on FB, then it's not too much of a stretch to suggest your main presence should be on FB.

Google "best facebook pages" and take some time to do some research, it's becoming pretty impressive what some people are doing. I've project managed some fairly decent stuff for some big name brands going back a year or so, but there's new, cool stuff popping up every day. Brands now run complete campaigns on Facebook only. It's not too far a stretch to see a business having only a FB presence online.

Well first, check your contract to see what it states in there if you have one.

If you don't have specifics in there, or have it open-ended, I'd suggest definitely talking to them about the projected deadline.

You can give them options as well. You can move the date back the same number of days late the design is, or you can add a fee, to allow you to get some additional help to speed up your development and get it into the original timeframe.

I think for very niche products, it can make sense for them to have the majority of their web presence to be on facebook.

However, it is never something I'd personally do, or suggest a company do. The web is still young, we don't know how long facebook will be the "king of the mountain". Everyone has this preconceived notion that somehow, Facebook will trump all the other networks and top dogs before it, and survive forever. I don't see any reason why that would be the case. While it is doing very well, it could also very easily slip up, and cause a mass exodus, or even a slow downturn of users.

Having a website for a business relieves you of the worry of your content or entire "page" being removed or shriveling up and dying. The web is ever-evolving, and putting all of your eggs into a basket that isn't in the slightest controlled by you, is one helluva dangerous move. With a website, you can move hosts, move domains, etc... With a Facebook page, you can potentially download data, and that is about it.

I've got a client that has a site to be launched in two months. Given the scope of the site, I felt this was adequate time. Then I received word that there was a delay with the design (I'm doing all the front end & CMS dev), so now things are one week delayed. It's now one week later and I emailed about the designs and haven't heard back. I used to be a little concerned about timeline, but now I'm a lot concerned.

How do I approach this with the client? Should I tell them that for each day I don't get the designs, we need to push the launch date back a day?

WordPress can certainly be passed as a CMS. I use WP almost exclusively for CMS projects( except for E-commerce because I use Shopify for that) . WP can be transformed into a robust and easy-to-use CMS with the help of custom post types and custom fields.

And nothing wrong with that, so long as you're also honest enough with a potential client when WP isn't the best solution and pass on the project. I have a couple of colleagues I pass on custom dev work to if it's not suitable for any of the CMS options I offer.

I agree.

I love working with WordPress on projects, but there are often other tools that work better for specific clients. There is no proverbial rosetta stone for all web projects.

WordPress is a great fit for a simple CMS, and it has one of the best administrations for clients in my experience. They most often pick it up faster than others, and that is if they haven't ever used it before, which many have.

I use Gmail and task management is easy. The most basic solution is to maintain a Task list in Gmail. And then email that task list to the client. The Task list has a function for email, which saves you a step. Takes seconds to do.

Or use Google Docs. You can share the document read by sending push notifications to the Client once a week. The only drawback to Google Docs is that the client needs a Gmail account to access a shared file. A work around is to download the task list into Excel, Word or PDF and email it to the client.

Bump "all" types of threads? Do you really think anything is so black & white? I give most users the benefit of the doubt they can work out what threads/subject matters are worth bumping and which are not. If you hold this thread as being a subject matter worth bumping then fine, I have no problem with that then.

You may blog because you love sharing your thoughts and writing, you may blog because it's a way of earning cash, you may blog because you see it as an exciting hobby and you may blog because you want to sell some of your collections, to be exact. I have a friend, she turns to be a blogger and she's good at it. She have collections of dresses and she actually wore it and took a picture in it and post it in her blog account. She's known for being a great blogger because of that.

Freelancing is a great job. It will help you in many ways, such as, providing you with a fair rate for your basic needs and to have a source of income to support your tuition fees in school. This also could be a great experience for you when time comes that you will be applying for a job in a certain company.

Thank you. I appreciate your reply, and gave me a different perspective since you have the design experience in the industry. I agree with your statements.
Race teams don't seem to focus on things easily. I was thinking of starting off with amateur riders looking to get noticed by sponsors. I could create some graphics, web sites, merchandise to get them noticed.

Also, I have a background in graphics, I could be of interest for many independent riders / racers at the track. Also, many riders own their own full time businesses, so that could be an added bonus. I was also interested in aiming my business at motorcycle dealerships, race track events, etc. I will not limit myself to just race teams, hence the difficulties you had with short term clients.

It is great to hear from someone with design experience in the industry and learn what to watch out for and what to avoid. I greatly appreciate that. Thank you.

Hello everyone,

I have just recently launched a new startup, InfluxShopping.com. We provide online store owners a place to showcase their store on our marketplace/online high-street.

We are trying to provide a centralised location for people to search for new online web stores, a twist on the current boring search engine methods and text link results, which can be only helpful for those with thousands to spend, to improve their search ranking.

The idea of the site is to display other peoples online eCommerce stores which can help them to grow, having their store listed amongst others will also drive traffic and overall have a centralised location for people to ‘shop’ online.

For example:
If your looking for ‘Clothing’ you could go to Google, but you’d get about 100,000,000 results and they won’t all be about clothing, also if you go into one of the results from Google and click 20 times, you’d have to click ‘Back’ on your browser 21 times to get back to Google, on my site you can switch from one store to another in one click.

Also filter out all stores that are un-related to what your searching for.

Any feedback on the site so far, or any suggestions anyone may have would be appreciated.

I like the simplicity of the site, it keeps the focus on your work. One thing you may consider is only displaying the work you are the most proud of in your portfolio. As of now, you have some good work in there, and then some that looks pretty dated.

I definitely see your point and often I recommend to clients to start a FB page or twitter account to enhance their website, get feedback and draw traffic to their website. Used in conjunction with a well designed site I see FB and twitter as useful tools for driving traffic. I just can't seem to wrap my head around ditching a web site/domain to totally focus on FB...

I can actually understand someone having this view. It's been reported that for many sites more people visit it from FB recommendations than finding it via Google or directly. And since a Facebook page can rank in Google anyway... I also know of a couple of web studios who direct their domain name to their FB page.

And I can also see FB eventually charging businesses for pages, and basically offering a page build "wizard" if some kind to build what would basically be a mini-site: facebook.com/acme-jeans

Far from being "small town", it could be argued it's "leading edge". ;)

Hence the importance of learning how to build pages/sites/apps within Facebook, it ain't going away anytime soon me thinks.

So how many of you have heard that one? With all the social media solutions, blog sites, etc it seems more business owners are not seeing the benefits of a website. I don't know whats worse, having a client that knows nothing about the "Inter-webby-thingy" or the ones that think they don't need a website because they have facebook or another social media site. I was wondering if anyone else has run across this issue or is it just the small town attitude of where I do business... "Free is always better."

I wonder if FB will start charging businesses for pages in the future when they have to start reporting earnings to the shareholders after the IPO....

And Veggie, you might consider that an item gets to be denied coverage because your state legislature said it was ok to deny that. A "standard" policy for all states still doesn't exist yet and what is required for coverage is defined by your state's legislature.

However, under the ACA, at the federal level coverage may be denied if coverage was previously denied for that condition.

Additionally, the penalty for denying coverage is prohibition from offering coverage again to that patient for six months, and the insurer may appeal if they want to offer coverage again to that patient.

Also, coverage is allowed to be denied or rescinded if the insurer can demonstrate that they will not be able to adequately provide coverage to you due to your condition.

The law is also not "no annual limits" - it's "no unreasonable annual limits" and can be overridden by federal and state regulations ("shall not be construed to prevent... annual or lifetime per beneficiary limits... otherwise permitted under Federal or State law").

Not all preventative medical services and products are allowed to be "free". They must have an "A" or "B" rating from the United States Preventive Services Task Force and must be services administered only after there has been sufficient evidence presented that you are at a higher risk than normal for that health condition. Additionally, the Secretary of Health and Human Services establishes the approved interval for covered preventative medical services, and that interval is not allowed to be less than one year. If your doctor recommends that you be checked every 3 or 6 months due to your personal health factors, those preventative services are not allowed to be covered.

Their math for determining if you cannot afford health insurance (and thus not subject to the fine for not obtaining coverage) is great: your monthly premium must exceed 8% of your annual gross income.

A real solution would have been to actually use the Commerce Clause properly and allow insurance to be purchased across state lines.

I don't disagree with any of the above. ACA is not what I would have wanted either (I prefer the Swiss model of requiring everyone to own a policy at birth that provides catastrophic coverage and you can fill in the rest if you want to pay for supplemental policies). But given what we had before, it's a step in the right direction, considering the horror stories about denied care that should have been covered, insurance companies that were spending more on salaries than on care, companies using "pre-existing conditions" to invalidate the years you spent paying to be covered, etc. You can't always get what you want.

And Veggie, you might consider that an item gets to be denied coverage because your state legislature said it was ok to deny that. A "standard" policy for all states still doesn't exist yet and what is required for coverage is defined by your state's legislature.

Yes, I have done this for quite a few clients, and like the others said, its a pretty easy thing for most to pick up. Check out this blog article that gives more info on how I like to train my clients to use it: http://thedeependdesign.com/how-to-train-your-clients-with-video-tutorials/

Deeve, doesn't being on the road mean you aren't covered (we would be covered "out of network") or does AU provide a travel feature to their plans?

I have travel insurance for emergencies abroad ($550/year, could have got around 30% cheaper but wanted it to cover "adventure" activities), but if I needed evacuation home due to anything serious after that all would be covered.

Read an article last year, if Obama had been in government in Australia and tried to get a health bill pushed through similar to the one he put forward in the US, it would have had no chance via either side of parliament due to it being so weak. Seriously, health coverage-wise, the US is probably the worst "developed" country to reside in.

Even in Argentina, I went to the hospital to have 6 stitches for a gash from a bicycle accident, and it was free. For a non-resident tourist on a tourist visa.
